Looking to learn a little bit of your target language before you
study abroad? Maybe you studied in high school or college, but now are a little
out of practice. Either way, there are many products out there to help you
either learn key words and phrases, or brush up on old skills. Also, studying
prior to your trip is a great way to ease your anxieties and help you adjust to
your new culture more rapidly.
We have found an excellent resource to do all of these things and
much more. Transparent Language is a company that has created a comprehensive
learning environment. There are many levels of learning and commitment,
including absolutely free download of BYKI software (for "Before You Know It"),
language blogs, articles, and games, to vocabulary, video immersion, audio cds
and complete learning suites.
BYKI is offered in 105 languages. Seriously. Pretty cool! It is an
easy and free way to explore different languages, from the normal (Spanish,
French, etc... ) to the more obscure (Cebuano, Inukitut, Xhosa, and more!). BYKI
helps you learn your target language quickly and effectively, as it keeps track
of which words and phrases are easy for you, and which ones give you trouble.
Thus, less time is wasted on things that you already know, and you can spend
time on the more difficult aspects of the language. There is a graph that shows
you what you know really well and where you need improvement. Very helpful!
